HOLLYWOOD, Fla., Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Memorial Healthcare System has named Atif M. Hussein, M.D., chief of Memorial Cancer Institute, recognizing more than 25 years of physician leadership and his role in helping build one of Florida's leading cancer programs.

Memorial Healthcare System

Recruited to Memorial Healthcare System from Duke University more than two decades ago, Dr. Hussein joined the organization when its cancer program consisted of only a handful of oncologists. Since then, he has helped transform Memorial Cancer Institute into a comprehensive cancer program, expanding multidisciplinary care, growing clinical research and graduate medical education, recruiting nationally recognized physicians and bringing innovative cancer treatments closer to home for patients throughout South Florida.

Today, Memorial Cancer Institute provides patients access to nationally recognized specialists, leading-edge clinical trials and advanced therapies through a comprehensive network of cancer services, making it one of the region's premier destinations for cancer care.

As chief, Dr. Hussein will oversee the strategic and clinical direction of Memorial Cancer Institute, working with physicians, researchers and multidisciplinary care teams to expand access to advanced cancer treatments, strengthen research and education, and continue improving outcomes for patients across the region. He will also help lead oncology collaboration efforts between Memorial Healthcare System and Broward Health as part of the organizations' Better Together initiative to expand access to specialized cancer care throughout Broward County.

"Dr. Hussein's appointment reflects our commitment to building one of the region's premier cancer programs," said Shane Strum, CEO of Memorial Healthcare System. "His leadership will be instrumental as we continue advancing cancer care across Memorial and strengthening collaboration with Broward Health to expand access to specialized services, innovative treatments and clinical research opportunities for patients throughout our community."

"Transforming cancer care through innovation and partnership, we are eliminating fragmented systems and expanding access to advanced oncology for our community and beyond," Dr. Hussein said. " I am honored to serve as chief of Memorial Cancer Institute and to work alongside an extraordinary team dedicated to advancing cancer care through clinical excellence, research and education. Together, we will continue expanding access to innovative treatments while ensuring every patient receives compassionate, personalized care close to home."

Before being named chief, Dr. Hussein served as medical director and program director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at Memorial Cancer Institute, where he helped train future oncologists while expanding the institute's academic and research mission. He also chairs Memorial's Cancer Committee and has played a key role in strengthening the institute's clinical research program.

In addition, Dr. Hussein serves on the Memorial Foundation Board of Directors, helping connect philanthropic support with initiatives that improve patient care, expand research and enhance education.

Dr. Hussein earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut. He completed his residency in internal medicine at American University Hospital and fellowships in hematology and oncology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
